Reminder. Family event. Earth Hour - Tomorrow Saturday 31st March- Kinsale Event

MEABHRÚCHÁN / REMINDER

Dear Schools,
Earth Hour 2012 is nearly upon us and another chance to be part of a huge global movement to spread meaningful awareness about climate change and the difference you and I can make.

Following the success of last year's event when over 300 people came to partake in releasing 100 sky lanterns from James Fort accompanied by fire dancers and drummers during the 'Earth Hour' of darkness, this year Transition Towns, Kinsale is producinga candlelit concert of acoustic music in the 800 year old St Multose Church, Kinsale. This will be a family event and we are inviting children to come up to the stage and be part of the closing song of the concert. The concert will start at 7.45pm and we will be powering off at 8.00pm. For the hour music, singing and dancing will all be in candle light only.

The part children can make is to decorate an old jam jar using ordinary paints mixed with some PVC glue attaching feathers, ribbons, sequins etc to their own design. They can then bring this jam jar to the concert if they are attending and we will provide a tealight which will be lit and placed up on the stage when the children join the singers. If they can't attend the concert then we would invite them to take the jar home and ask their parents to light it between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday 31st March. In doing this they will be joining in with over 135 countries and terratories, 5251 cities and towns, reaching 1.8 billion people, in the world's largest voluntary action for the environment.

For more information click http://www.earthhour.org/

To go 'beyond the hour' we are also inviting children to make a pledge e.g. turn the light off in their bedroom when they are not there; walk to school one day a week if this feasible; plant something to eat in their garden or a herb for their kitchen window. These written pledges will be placed in our 'beyond the hour' box when the children come up to light their tea lights. Some more ideas to 'powerdown' can be found in the attachment.

Last year Gurraneasig N.S. went beyond the hour and made a committment to adopt an endangered species through the World Wildlife Fund every year. Through the PA they organised a 'Wear it Bright Day' when the children could come into school in their brightest clothes with an old jam jar to decorate, and a suggested donation of 2 euro. The children greeted the idea with so much enthusiasm that they managed to raise enough money to adopt two endangered animals. The children then held a vote with ballot boxes to choose the animals they were going to adopt, and a Giant Panda and a Bengal Tiger won. The school now intends to use it as a learning resource for teaching environmental awareness. This year they are doing it all again on Friday 30th March.

Perhaps your school could do the same or something similar. So start collecting your jam jars!

Do please join us for what is set to be another magical event.

Primary Science on Show Internationally

Primary School children in Luxembourg will get the opportunity to experience hands on science and maths workshops Cork style as local primary science centre Lifetime Lab participates in "Discovering the World Week" from March 26th to 30th.

Discovering the World is a science themed series of events and activities centred on delivering international educational experiences to primary school children in Luxembourg with participants selected from countries all over Europe. Lifetime Lab @ Old Cork Waterworks was specifically identified as an ideal candidate for its "hands on" approach to promoting science and maths and is the only centre from Ireland and Britain to have been invited.

Speaking about the opportunity Mervyn Horgan Manager of Lifetime Lab said "The invitation is a complement to our education programmes, to be identified internationally and invited to participate is a testament to the success of Lifetime Lab. He further said "Close to 8,000 primary school children, from senior infants to sixth classes experience a positive experience of science, maths, technology and engineering, you could say we are a science nursery, inspiring the minds of the future".

Lifetime Lab will deliver two distinct hands on workshops, "MathsWorks" explores a multi sensory approach to primary maths and "Simple Circuits" themed on electricity, to over 1000 children while in Luxembourg

Lifetime Lab @ Old Cork Waterworks is Cork's primary science centre, an accredited discover primary science & maths venue and has received numerous international and national awards. For more information, please contact lifetimelab@corkcity.ie or 021 4941500 or go to www.lifetimelab.ie

FW: Choowawaa Art Event and Exhibition for Children at West Cork Arts Centre

CHOOWAWAA!

 An Arts Event for Children

 24 March – 14 April 2012

The Gallery at West Cork Arts Centre has been taken over by aliens and animations, alongside dozens of colourful bottles with secret messages in them as well as models of cities and landscapes that comprise just a taste of the first of this year's children's art exhibitions, Points of ViewThis exhibition is part of CHOOWAWAA!, West Cork Arts Centre's long running annual Arts Event and Exhibition for children and features work created by over 200 children in primary schools from across West Cork who responded to artist Amy Walsh's exhibition Free-Fall at WCAC last Autumn. The artwork on show also includes print, collage, painting and felt artworks.

Skibbereen Library is the venue for the second Choowawaa art exhibition created by children, aged 6 to 9 years old, who attend WCAC's after school Art Club. In Motion is a collection of drawings and two stop motion animation films made by the children in collaboration with artists Kathy O'Leary and Caoimhe Pendred.

WCAC has a great programme of events lined up this year for children aged from 2 to 12 year's old.   Two exhibitions, storytelling, Discovery Box, dance and art workshops along with performances from Cork's Graffiti Theatre Company are all on offer starting on Saturday 24 March and continuing right through the Easter Holidays.

Walking Man written by Jody O'Neill, is an exciting performance designed especially for children by Graffiti Theatre CompanyWalking Man is succinctly described as: "a captivating piece of theatre, which is told through the use of wooden puppets and live music. A production of magic and wonder", by Irish Theatre Magazine's review.

The launch of the Storyteller's Chair, made by green wood chair-maker Alison Ospina, in imaginative collaboration with children from Abbeystrewery National School in Skibbereen, will take place at Skibbereen Library.  The Chair, which now resides in Skibbereen Library, is accompanied by a book telling its story, and the Storyteller's Chair will be the focus of storytelling for many years to come in the library.

Discovery Box is an adventurous collection of props and art materials for parents to use with their young children in the gallery. Created by artist Sarah Ruttle, the contents of the Discovery Box are specially designed to accompany the exhibition Points of View.  Children will be able to record their own mini-soundtrack to their gallery adventure as well as use magnifying glasses and binoculars to view the artworks from different perspectives. The Box also holds many creative surprises for children to enjoy.

There's also the opportunity to join with the youngsters in Art Club and help them to create a universe of exploding stars, colliding comets and orbiting planets with artist Tess Leak's Constellation Installation workshop.  Introductory dance workshops from Alan Foley Academy of Dance are sure to get everyone moving and visual artist Caoimhe Pendred will take children on a fanciful paper trail as they sculpt imaginary 3D characters in her Fantasy Paper Sculpture workshop and a whole new world full of creative creatures, inspired by the Points of View exhibition, will be the result of a morning working with clay in Creative Characters.

Full information on Choowawaa! is available on www.westcorkartscentre.com where the brochure is available to download.  Bookings for events and workshops can be made by calling WCAC on

028 - 22090

WCAC acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this exhibition possible.

World Autism Day, Monday 2nd April

Ón Independent:
Cork football star, Bantry Blues' Graham Canty has rowed in behind Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland's efforts to turn Cork blue on World Autism Day on Monday 2 April. Blue is the official colour of autism.
The Mallow based national charity asks people right across Cork city and county to show their support by dying their hair, wearing blue shoes, wigs, nail polish or clothes on World Autism Day to raise awareness and understanding of autism.
Graham Canty said, "I have my blue colours nailed to the mast 365 days a year, but why not join me for just €1 for one day and support AADI in the process. Each donation to AADI will make a huge difference to autistic children and their families".
"We hope that people will follow Graham's footsteps and get in touch and to tell us how they themselves, their organisation or school are turning blue and supporting autism awareness in the process," said Breeda Clancy, AADI Director of Fundraising.
AADI was established 2 years ago and has so far made a huge difference to the lives of many autistic children in Dublin, Offaly, Tipperary, Galway and Cork. "We train dogs, mainly Labradors or Golden retrievers, as assistance dogs to help autistic children break down the barriers preventing them from interacting with society. The effects a dog can have on a child and their family life is truly amazing, but it costs €15,000 per dog, between food, training and veterinary costs," said AADI training service manager Nuala Geraghty.
AADI are looking for volunteers to take part in marathons in Cork, Limerick, Dublin and elsewhere around the country or undertake other fundraising drives for the charity, which is not Government funded.
Local radio station C103 is also supporting the efforts to turning Cork blue for World Autism Day, with on air promotions running in the lead up to the day. You can register your efforts to turn Cork blue at www.aadi.ie or by calling 022-43851. You can join AADI on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @autismdogsirl.

Please have entries submitted to school secretary by this Thursday, March 22nd. with name and age at the back of all entries.
