NEWB National Consultation on the Development of Guidelines for School Attendance Strategies

Reminder – Questionnaire will close 31.5.2012
Apologies if you have already completed this
National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB):
Development of Guidelines for School Attendance Strategies
National Consultation – Parent/Guardian Questionnaire
Dear Parent
We are acutely aware that absenteeism is one of the strongest factors associated with early school leaving. The strength of the link between missing school, underachievement and early school leaving is confirmed in several research studies. We know that even while still in school students who miss large amounts of school time can experience social and emotional costs through alienation from peers and staff. We also know that children who leave school early tend not to re-engage with education and therefore remain at a disadvantage throughout their lives.
The National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) has a key role in supporting schools to adopt a range of strategies to maximise student attendance, participation and retention. Under Section 22 of the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, schools are obliged “to prepare and submit to the Board a statement of the strategies and measures it proposes to adopt for the purposes of fostering an appreciation of learning among students attending that school and encouraging regular attendance at school on the part of such students”.

The resulting Statement of Strategy forms an integral part of each school plan.  The act charges the NEWB with issuing Guidelines to Boards of Management of recognised schools to assist them in complying with their statutory obligations. NEWB is currently fully engaged in this work which we envisage will be in place for the new academic year 2012-2013.

We recognise that the involvement of parents/guardians is critical to the development of robust Guidelines and therefore invite views from you on matters relating to attendance.

This consultation
An on-line questionnaire has been developed which seeks to gather your views on the following key areas:

Interventions which are working well in the promotion of good attendance;
Interventions which are working well to address non-attendance; and

How schools should communicate with parents and pupils about their attendance approach/policy.

Press Crtl + click to follow this link http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7KRCZCW to complete the on-line questionnaire
The questionnaire should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The closing date for responses is Friday 25th May 2012.

What will happen to your Views?
The response to the consultation questionnaire will be analysed independently on behalf of NEWB by RSM McClure Watters. A summary report will be provided in due course on www.newb.ie

Further information
I am confident that you value the opportunity to contribute to the Guidelines which will ultimately result in a resource to assist all schools in the critical area of school attendance.
Sincere thanks in advance for your time and support. We look forward to receiving your valued contribution.
Clare Ryan
NEWB, Chief Executive Officer

Fógra mar gheall ar an gcarrchlós / Notice about the car park

A thuismitheoirí,
Teastaíonn uaim fógra a cur amach mar gheall ar an gcarrchlós amuigh. Tá drochscéalta tar éis teacht chugam mar gheall ar tuismitheoirí agus daoine ag teacht chun na scoile chun páistí a bhailiú nó a fhágaint ar scoil ar maidin. De réir na scéalta seo tá roinnt daoine ann nach bhfuil consiasach faoi páistí ag trasnú an bóthar agus faoi tiománaithe eile.
Táimid ag deileál len alán teaglaigh éagsúla anseo agus aithním nach bhfuil cúrsaí foirfe lasmuigh ach tá an scéal céanna i gceist ann le formhór na scoileanna sa tír. Táimid ag obair leis an ROS faoi láithir chun láithrín dí-chur páistí a fhorbairt ach níl sé i bhfeidhm fós.
  • Tá 5 seachtain scoile fágtha againn anois. Ní ghá do thuismitheoirí a bpáistí a shiúl isteach ar maidin.  Rachfaidh mé féin timpeall go dtí na Naí-ranganna chun é seo a mhíniú. Éiríonn leo siúl isteach leo féin 3 uaire i rith an lae agus is dóigh liom go bhfuil sé go maith in am dóibh é seo a dhéanamh leo féin ar maidin chomh maith.
  • Impím oraibh tiomáint níos moille ag teacht i dtreo na scoile agus á bhfágaint timpeall ar an mbealach isteach.
  • Ní cheart daoibh páirceáil dúbailte a dhéanamh ar an achar beag talún ar thaobh na scoile in aice an mbóthar. Fág saor an áit sin le bhur dtola.
  • Molaimíd ligeant dos na páistí níos sinne siúl abhaile. Tuigim go hiomlán an amhras atá ar thuismitheoirí é seo a dhéanamh faoi láithir toisc an slí dáinséarach a mbíonn daoine ag tiomáint agus an slí a bhíonn gluaisteáin ag cur bac le radharc ar an mbóthar. Má feabhasaíonn na cúrsaí sin ba cheart go mbeadh se níos sábhalta ar an mbóthar lasmuigh.
  • Ná déanaigí dearmad gur sinne na daoine fásta - táimid ag deileál le páistí. Ba cheart go ndéanfaimís rudaí níos fusa/níos sábhalta dóibh in ionad níos deacra. I ndeireadh na dála níl timpist tubaisteach ag teastáil ó éinne anseo.
Dear parents,
I would like to put out a notice about the car park outside. I have received some bad news about parents and people coming to the school to collect and drop off children in the morning. According to what i am hearing thare are a few people that are not conscious of children crossing the road and of other drivers. We are dealing with a lot of different households here and I realise that things aren't perfect outside but it's the same story for most schools in the country. We are working with the Department of Education and Skills at present to develop a dropping off area for children but it's not in place yet.
  • We have 5 school weeks left now. There is no need for parents to walk in with their children in the morning. I will go around myself to the infant classes to explain this. They manage to walk in themselves 3 times during the day and I think that it is well in time for them to do this themselves in the morning also.
  • I implore of you to drive more slowly when arriving to and leaving the school - around the entrance.
  • There should be no double parking on the small fenced area of land at the side of the road by the entrance to the school. Please leave this area free.
  • We encourage you to let the older children walk home. I fully understand how parents are unsure about doing this at present as and people are driving so dangerously and the way in which cars are obstructing the view of the road. When these things improve it should make things safer on the road outside.
  • Don't forget that we are the grown ups - we are dealing with children. We should make things easier / safer for them instead of more difficult. At the end of the day we don't want anyone here to have an tragic accident or any sort of accident.

Calling for people interested in a school-bus service from Summercove
We are trying to get a school bus organised from Summercove for the next school year.  Having our children travelling in the bus to school will save us individual driving & therefore time & money and will in general save on fuel & be therefore less polluting to our environment.  However, we will only get a bus if we have a sufficient number of children.
If you are interested and live in the Summercove area please contact:
Joye O'Donovan   087-2327201 or Insa Lichtsinn   086-1237300.

Fwd: Do you know someone who'd appreciate fresh hand-grown Kinsale organic vegetables for €15 a week

Hi there, I wonder if you can help a special local enterprise....

You may have heard of  Kinsale Green Growers , created from nothing over the last 3 years, by Aimi Pinder. One of life's amazing and committed people, following her studies at Kinsale College.

She supplies 50 local families with a weekly bag of delicious, organic, freshly harvested vegetables for 30 weeks of the year, without any grants, loans, subsidies or other help. (I lie, she has a 43 year old tractor !)

As the harvest kicks off in 3 weeks from now, she needs 5 more customers to make sure the wages for the team of 2 can be sustained through to 2013.

So, if you know anyone who values this kind of enterprise....and just loves great food (including melons this year !!).....please pass this link on  and ask your friends to make a quick decision.

It's less €15 a week, with home delivery if you need it....I've done it for 2 years.....it's just the best..... you are even invited to go see the harvest as it grows, and learn why its so good.

Thanks a million,

--

Griangrafanna ó Sport na Chathrach 18 Bealtaine '12

Chomhghairdeas do gach pháiste a ghlac páirt i Sport na Chathrach inniú. D'éirigh le roinnt dóibh duaiseanna éagsúla a bhuachaint agus níos tábhachtaí ná sin bhain siad go léir an-taitneamh as an lá. Níl griangraf fós do gach páiste a bhí páirteach ann ach tá níos mó ag teacht go luath!  Mar is gnách bhí iompar na bpáistí an-mhaith agus is féidir linn a bheith an-bhródúil astu. Maith sibh a pháistí!
Congratulations and well done to all the children who participated in the City Sports today. Some children won prizes but more importantly they all had a great day and enjoyed themselves. We haven't photos of every child that participated yet but we'll be putting more up soon. As usual, the children were very well behaved and mannerly and I am so proud and happy to be able to rely on them always. Well done kids!

TG4 ‘Bia Linn’ Casting

A Chara,
Indee Productions ag forbairt sraith clár teilifíse do pháistí a chraolfar ar TG4. Tá cainteoirí óga Gaeilge á lorg againn le bheith páirteach sa tsraith. Páistí muiníneacha, bríomhara 4-6 bliana d’aois atá uainn.
Cláir chócaireachta do pháistí atá i gceist leis an tsraith ina mbeidh beochain, puipéid agus láithreoir. Beidh na páistí sa chistin i gcuideachta an láithreora agus na bpuipéad agus déanfaidh siad na hoidis ar leith a bheidh faoi chaibidil.
Is i stiúideo TG4 a dhéanfar an scannánaíocht an choicís dheireanach i mí Lúnasa 2012. Beidh ar na páistí teacht chuig an stiúideo ar feadh lae agus a bheith páirteach in eagrán nó dhó den tsraith.
An bhfuil aithne agat ar pháistí ar bith a bheadh fóirsteanach agus ar mhaith leo bheith páirteach ann? Má tá, bheinn buíoch díot ach an fhoirm atá iniata a thabhairt dóibh agus a iarraidh orthu í a chur ar ais chugam in oifig Indee Productions. Rachaimid i dteagmháil ansin le tuismitheoirí na bpáistí le heolas a thabhairt dóibh faoin phróiseas roghnúcháin.

Indee Productions is developing a children’s series for TG4, and we are looking for outgoing young gaelgoirs to take part. Ideally we are looking for confident children aged 4 – 6.
This is a kid’s cookery series featuring animation, puppets and a live action presenter. The children would be in the kitchen with the live action presenter and some puppet friends, making the recipes featured.
Filming would take place in TG4 television studios during the last two weeks of August 2012. The children would come to studio for a day and would feature in one – two episodes of the series.
Do you know anyone who would be suitable / interested in taking part? If so could they fill out the enclosed form and send back to me at Indee productions? We will then get in touch with the children’s parents regarding the casting process for the series.

Is mise, le meas,
Gráinne McGuinness
